As the region expects its population to double to more than 600 million within 40 years, and with climate change raising global temperatures, the regions’ water demands are growing at a fast pace, putting tremendous pressure on their already strained water resources. Therefore governments and NGOs are uniting to find solutions to the water shortage, solutions that make the most of the regions’ existing resources and landscapes.

Energy Storage for the Future

With this growing share of renewable power in the energy mix comes a challenge, however: as opposed to traditional power plants, renewables do not continuously generate power, causing fluctuations in the power grid. Highly flexible back up power generation solutions like GE’s FlexEfficiency 50 combined cycle plant are one way of balancing out the grid. Another one must be the vast expansion of energy storage.
