UK: Community-owned renewable energy projects are the way forward

Support for community-owned renewable energy projects is mounting as onshore windfarm developments continue to receive much opposition. In certain regions of the country, projects that are owned by local community and that are managed co-operatively are growing in numbers.

In Whitby, North Yorkshire, a new hydro-power scheme is entering its final phases after a £450,000 contract was awarded to a local construction company to design and install the turbine. Not only is the scheme owned by the local community but it also employs local firms and operates under a co-operative structure, allowing the project to be more sustainable.

A meeting was held in London last night between industry players, media and a climate scientist with the aim of promoting the attractiveness of community-owned schemes.
