UK: Hidden charges faced by smart meter users
Contract terms and different smart meter technology platforms are restricting competition as businesses face rising energy prices.
In order to provide new products and services and to help companies and households monitor their own consumption, energy suppliers are offering free sophisticated meters as part of a national programme. According to a price comparison company, while the number of companies who want to install the new meters is increasing, a lot of contracts are cancelled because of the “extras” attached. Businesses are finding charges ranging from 20p to 60p a day are being added to their bills in the shape of additional standing charges. In certain cases rental fees are being established if customers switch suppliers.
